ACT ONE

LITTLE BLACK BOXES

These little black boxes I keep in a bag,
The plainest black boxes a man ever had,
I wonder what treasure each box may contain.
I’m hopelessly curious, it’s hard to refrain.

Take one please, have faith in me.
Keep this from harm and you will see.
But if you open it you’ll be blue.
The treasure will never be granted you.

Now this is ridic’lous, it’s only a box.
It seems rather empty. You’re sly as a fox,
To fool these good people with tricks up your sleeve.
I laugh at your notions, I do disbelieve.

Patience please, have faith in me.
Keep these from harm, and you will see.
But if you open them you’ll be blue.
The treasure will never be granted you.

These little black boxes he keeps in a bag,
the plainest black boxes a man ever had,
I wonder what treasure each box may contain.
I’m hopelessly curious, it’s hard to refrain.
Patience please, have faith in me.
Keep them from harm and you will see.

MAGIC BOXES

Magic boxes, keeping secrets.
Magic boxes please reveal your secrets to me.

Do you hold treasure, to bring someone pleasure . . . maybe?
Will it be golden, or ancient and olden . . . we’ll see?

Those who are caring gain riches from sharing,
for the act is its own reward.
But those who are greedy will pay for it dearly,
a victim of their hardened hearts.

Magic boxes, keeping secrets.
Magic boxes please reveal your secrets to us.

(repeat)

Love for the lonely, good looks for the homely . . . it’s true.
Cures for injustice and words for the flustered . . . like you.

Those who are selfish, will need the most help,
if they fail to change their ways.
Those who are honest, will reap all the harvest,
for this is what the boxes say.

Magic boxes, keeping secrets.
Magic boxes please, reveal your secrets to us.

(repeat)

WORK

Work is the cornerstone of every known society.
It fosters confidence. It fosters human dignity.

He sweeps the floors.
She keeps the books.
He fixes pipes.
You catch the crooks.
And these are jobs to be proud of!

We cannot prosper without work being done in some degree.
It builds good character and a happy life for you and for me.

Tell them what you do!

I sweep the floors!
I keep the books!
I fix the pipes!
I catch the crooks!
And these are jobs to be proud of.

And when the day is done, you think of your accomplishments.
A satisfaction comes. You’ve earned the right to rest a bit.

Take off your shoes,
And rest your feet.
Enjoy a meal.
Your day’s complete.
And that’s a thing to be proud of.

SHARING

Thank you sir for your thoughts,
For your kindness,

Though I try very hard to care for myself,
It’s a job that fate seems dead-set against.

I try to do what is right,
I try to lead a good life.
I can not cure all the wrongs
But at least I’ll go on trying.

Sometimes life isn’t fair, isn’t easy.
Though the trials that we bear,
 May strengthen the soul,
They seem cruel, unjust,
When you’re in the cold.

You’re very kind dear sir,
You know you seem rather nice.
Good fortune smiles on me now,
As we share a bit of sandwich.

HONEY

Honey,
Honey,
I need your help,
Your opinion please.
Honey,
Honey,
I need your help right away.

My opinion is,
My opinion is,
That we should sleep on it,
Yes we should sleep on it.
(repeat)

Mother,
Mother,
I need your help,
your opinion please
Mother,
Mother,
I need your help, right away.
My opinion is,
My opinion is,
You should marry her,
Yes you should marry her.

(repeat, and then all verses
are sung simultaneously)

Sugar Bear,
Sugar Bear,
what da’ya make of this?
I’m quite afraid of it.
Sugar Bear,
Sugar Bear,
what da’ya make of this?
Tell me please.

Let me think a bit.
I need to think a bit.
We should ask someone.
Yes we should ask someone.

(repeat)

Sweetie Pie,
Sweetie Pie,
Now did you see these things,
These things a Boxman brings?

(repeat)

We’ll let the treasure come.
We’ll let the treasure come.
I think we’re rich at last.
We struck the mother load.

(repeat)

VICTORY

Citizens and cats beware.
Try to catch me if you dare.
I’m familiar with the shadows.
I know shortcuts, I know narrows.
In a quandary?
Can’t outsmart me?
Don’t feel bad.
You’re just one of many.

Sweet success is in the air.
I can break in anywhere.
There’s no thief who can compare.
It spells Victory! for a crook like me.

Expert is as expert does.
Why I steal is just because.
The time is right, I better quicken.
Climb the wall in seven seconds.
Pry the window.
Quiet I go.
In on tip toe.
It’s that simple—
just watch me!

(repeat refrain)

ONCE IN A WHILE

Once in awhile,
Somebody smiles somewhere.
Once in awhile,
Somebody smiles at us.

Now, when you both were babies,
my heart was overflowing with joy.
When I peeked in your cradles at night,
I smiled at my girl and my boy.

So fast, you grow, you get up and go.
Why can’t the clock take a rest?
And though it goes fast, I will not forget.
The memories live on in my head.

Once in a while,
Somebody smiles somewhere.
Once in a while,
Somebody smiles at us.

I married my high school sweetheart—
the very best choice I could make.
He certainly loved his children.
He played with you most every day.

But then, the Lord came and took him away.
Why did we all have to part?

And ever since then, we’ve felt incomplete—
he left with a piece of our hearts.

Once in a while,
Somebody smiles somewhere.
Somewhere.
Somewhere.

ANTHONY

I’m Anthony.
You’re Christopher.
She’s Cynthia.
He, he is gone.

I have this thing to do,
I can’t explain to you.
But, if we see it through,
All will be well.

You’re such a special boy,
wide-eyed and full of joy.
I have a wish for you,
to find a new Dad.

I’m Anthony.
You’re Christopher.
She’s Cynthia.
He,  his name will be John.

MAGIC BOXES—REPRISE

Magic boxes, keeping secrets.
Magic boxes please reveal your secrets to me.

I want a pony and a swing set, if only I could.
I'd like a playhouse all painted and made out of wood.

But if you give me the daddy I seek,
I will gladly skip the rest.
Mommy’d be happy, I’d sit on his lap,
He would tuck me in my bed at night.

Magic boxes, keeping secrets.
Magic boxes please reveal your secrets to me.

(repeat)

I want a new dolly and my lost cat Molly to find.
A bike would be nice and a music box simply divine.

But if you give me the daddy I seek,
I will gladly skip the rest.
Mommy’d be happy, I’d sit on his lap,
He would tuck me in my bed at night.

Magic boxes, keeping secrets.
Magic boxes please reveal your secrets to us.

ALIVE

The boxes have come alive.
Growing, & changing now.
Color’s the new surprise.
Purple, red, polka dots too!
What do they symbolize?
Tell us now please.
It’s a game to test the keenest mind.

We need to organize.
Call the cops! Hide the kids!
We need to mobilize.
Start the cars!
Pack the clothes!
The boxes have come alive.
Make them stop please.
And I’m not too certain what that means.

What if they terrorize?
Run away!
Get away!
Perhaps we should tranquilize!
Then we’ll stay!
Then we’ll stay!
Then they might stabilize.
Sounds like a plan.
Cause if this spells curtains, we’ll all die.

Try not to panic, please
I think they’re meant to tease.
I’d like to disagree!
They were harmless once, but now they’re not!

The boxes have come alive.
Color’s the new surprise.
What do they symbolize?
It’s a game to test the keenest mind.

Alive!!

CATS

I’ve seen cats of every kind,
Lofty breeds quite hard to find.
A short-haired black that brought good luck,
A Russian blue with lots of pluck.

But in all my years of judging,
And you know I’ve had a few,
I have never seen a cat as beautiful as you.

I’ve seen cats with diamond collars,
That were worth  a million dollars.
I’ve seen famous, I’ve seen not.
Some have owners very HOT!!

But in all my years of judging,
And you know I’ve had a few,
I have never seen a girl as beautiful as you.

I’ve seen cats as white as snow,
And several breeds I did not know.
I saw one giving me a smile,
While playing fiddle all the while.

But in all my years of judging,
And you know I’ve had a few,
I have never seen a cat as beautiful as you.

I saw a cat of orange cream,
With caramel along the seam.
A rich, dark cocoa on her brow,
And chocolate points,  I’m hungry now.

But in all our years of judging,
And you know we’ve had a few,
We have never seen a cat as beautiful as you.

THIS MAN IN UNIFORM

Relax, take off your tie,
it’s time you loosened up.
Hold hands, now don’t be shy,
Don’t want if, ands, or buts.

This man in uniform,
He’s got a handsome walk,
He’s got a handsome talk.

This man in uniform,
He is tall and dark,
And suave and smart.
Now if we sing this song,
We’ll have a good time.
And if we get along,
I’ll say that you’re mine.

But now the evening’s young.
I’ll try to do no wrong.
It’s nice to have someone,
To spend my time with.

(repeat refrain)

I NEVER WOULD HAVE GUESSED

I can see through the surface,
Though you try to hide,
There’s a man who is gentle,
And sweet inside.
I can tell by the way,
That you hold me so dear.
I can say without pausing,
I can say without fear.

I can tell by the stories,
That you whisper to me,
That your soul is as pure,
As an angel’s must be.
It’s a pleasure to witness,
A pleasure to see
As we’re sharing these moments,
As we’re sharing our tea.

But I never would have guessed,
In a million years,
I never would have guessed at all.
It’s really rather simple,
Now my vision is so clear,
I was always meant to be with you.

Let’s be joyful and happy,
To finally be bound,
By the love that was missing,
And now has been found.
It’s a magic occurrence,
When wandering hearts,
Wander back to each other,
Wander back to the start.

Though I’m older and wiser,
I feel rather young,
And the words that I utter,
Still cling to my tongue.
Now my only regrets,
Are the years we let pass,
Yet we’re still the same spirits,
That we were in the past.

(repeat refrain twice)

It’s really rather simple,
Now my vision is so clear,
I was always meant to be with you.

LITTLE BLACK BOXES—REPRISE

These little black boxes I keep in a bag,
The plainest black boxes a man ever had,
I wonder what treasure each box may contain.
I'm hopelessly curious, it’s hard to refrain.

Keep them from harm and you will see.
But if you open them you'll be blue.
The treasure will never be granted you.
